National Industry PhD Program

Turn research into impact with an industry PhD

An Industry PhD is a doctoral degree structured around real-world industry needs. Guided by both academic and industry supervisors, candidates complete a collaboratively designed research project involving both the university and an industry partner.

The National Industry PhD Program enables candidates to pursue research that addresses industry challenges, while developing the skills needed to turn university research into practical and commercial outcomes. Graduates will be prepared to work at the intersection of research and industry, and to move confidently between the two sectors in the future.

The NIPhD program offers two streams

Industry Linked PhD stream

Designed for exceptional candidates undertaking research developed jointly by a university and industry, with opportunities to work directly within an industry environment.

Industry Researcher PhD stream

Designed for experienced industry professionals whose employers support them to undertake a PhD in collaboration with a university, allowing them to maintain their employment and salary while completing their research.

UniSC’s Industry-linked PhD is designed for experienced professionals whose employers support them to undertake a PhD in collaboration with a university. This allows candidates to continue working and maintain their salary while completing their research.

Key Features

  • Two NIPhD rounds per year, typically in February and July
  • Support for industry partners to connect with academic researchers in relevant fields
  • Assistance with the application process through the Graduate Research School

Application Process

Applications to the NIPhD program must be submitted by a Graduate Research Liaison Officer (GRLO) on behalf of the university, industry partner, and candidate project team. At UniSC, the designated GRLO is based in the Graduate Research School.

For successful applicants in the Industry-Linked NIPhD stream, the Graduate Research School also supports the industry partner and academic team in recruiting and admitting their preferred candidate into the PhD program.

Prospective HDR candidates can view all current scholarship opportunities, including Industry-Linked NIPhD vacancies, via HDR scholarships.

Whether you’re an industry partner or a HDR candidate interested in collaborating on a research project, we’re here to help.

Expressions of interest from industry organisations

Expressions of interest are welcomed from industry organisations seeking to collaborate on research projects with applied impact, for consideration in the CSIRO iPHD rounds. The Graduate Research School provides dedicated support to our industry partners applying to the CSIRO iPhD Program.
