Contract research collaborations

Contract research collaborations bring industry partners and Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates together to deliver real-world research outcomes.

Projects are co-designed with the University, giving organisations access to specialist expertise and academic support, while HDR candidates gain valuable industry experience by applying their research to practical challenges and building professional skills.

Industry partners

Industry Partners can connect and collaborate with our Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates through contract research collaborations. Contract research projects allow the industry partner to set the scope, length and deliverables of the research in negotiation with the University, and partner with a HDR candidate overseen by their academic supervision team.

Engaging the University for Contract Research projects gives industry partners access to:

  • Specialist research expertise to investigate challenges, develop solutions, or generate new knowledge relevant to your organisation.
  • Cutting-edge facilities and academic supervision, ensuring highquality research outcomes supported by experienced university researchers.
  • Innovative thinking from emerging researchers, bringing fresh insights, data-driven approaches, and novel perspectives.
  • Flexible, project-based research, tailored to your organisation’s timelines, scope, and commercial needs.
  • Clear contractual arrangements, including IP, confidentiality, and deliverables, ensuring a smooth and secure research process.

Industry partners seeking collaboration can be matched with suitable HDR candidates through the support of the Graduate Research School.

Candidates

HDR candidates can participate in Contract Research projects to build professional experience and apply their research skills beyond the university environment. Candidates may:

  • Work on an externally funded research problem aligned with their expertise.
  • Collaborate with industry professionals, gaining practical insights and networks.
  • Develop skills in applied research, project management, and communication.
  • Contribute to impactful, real world outcomes while progressing their research degree.

Candidates interested in participating in contract research opportunities are encouraged to speak with their Principal Supervisor about their interest in industry-linked research and to contact the HDR Partnerships team for current opportunities or to discuss potential project matches.
