Partnering with Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) UniSC’s Sexual Violence Research and Prevention Unit (SVRPU) will design a new elective module on Domestic and Family Violence (DFV), for inclusion in the already established Strong & Solid Spirit: Community & Accountability (SSS) program for First Nations men incarcerated for a sexual offence.
The psychoeducational DFV module will be culturally relevant and tailored specifically for participants, ensuring that it addresses the unique needs of First Nations communities. Module design and development will be informed by consultation with QCS’s First Nations Advisory Committee, DFV experts, QCS First Nations and programs staff, and informed by a review of literature.
Impact
The DFV module is expected to enhance the existing SSS program by providing targeted education and support for participants grappling with the complexities of Domestic and Family Violence. By integrating culturally centred approaches and accountability practices, the module aims to build participants motivation for positive behavioural change, ultimately contributing to safer communities and reducing recidivism rates. Integrating the focus on sexual and domestically violent behaviour is unique in sexual offender specific treatment program and reflects the emerging research and thinking in this area.
