Ecology, conservation, and biodiversity

K’gari research cluster

Ecology, conservation, and biodiversity theme areas of focus are:

  • Focus on the genetics and conservation of threatened species (e.g., K’gari dingo (wongari), glossy black-cockatoo).
  • Fire ecology and links to indigenous land management practices.
  • Ecology of lakes, and swamps, with emphasis on globally significant peat swamps.

K’gari supports diverse and often threatened species, making conservation research a major priority. Studies focus on the genetics and ecology of species such as the K’gari dingo (wongari) and glossy black‑cockatoo, as well as broader ecosystem dynamics across lakes, swamps, forests, and heathlands.

Fire ecology is a key theme, with researchers examining the role of Indigenous land management practices in shaping healthy ecosystems. The island’s perched dune lakes and peat swamps are globally significant, offering unique opportunities to study aquatic ecology and long‑term environmental change.
