My name is Yulin, and I’m from China and I am currently studying the Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics.
I chose to study at UniSC because I was attracted by its strong health science programs, supportive learning environment, and the beautiful lifestyle of the Sunshine Coast.
I became interested in this profession after seeing how assistive devices can change people’s lives and help them regain independence and mobility. During a snow mountain hiking trip, I met a person with a prosthetic limb who was determined to reach the summit despite many challenges. That experience left a strong impression on me and inspired me to pursue a career where I can help people improve their quality of life.
I decided to come to Australia because of its high-quality education system, multicultural environment, and strong healthcare industry. I also wanted to challenge myself, improve my English skills, and gain international experience while preparing for my future career.
One of my favourite things about studying at UniSC is the environment. When I feel tired from studying, I can always see the blue sky and green grass, which helps me relax.
I really enjoy my Prosthetics and Orthotics program because it has a lot of hands-on work. After spending weeks building a model, finishing it feels very rewarding.
I also like the campus food. The restaurant posts weekly menus on Instagram, and there are often different international dishes. The meals are also very cheap for students, around seven dollars for a balanced lunch.
Overall, my time at UniSC has made me more motivated and clearer about my goal to become a Prosthetist-Orthotist. Life on the Sunshine Coast is very relaxed and beautiful. At UniSC, I often join Student Guild activities, which are posted weekly on Instagram. It’s a great way to meet new people and make friends from different backgrounds.
My favourite place here is Alexandra Head. Before sunset, it looks incredible; the light, ocean, and mist together create a very special atmosphere.
Around the region, I also love Noosa. I’ve seen dolphins and even whales there, which really shows how rich the local environment is.
Overall, living here has made my student experience much more enjoyable. Being close to nature and wildlife makes me want to explore more and learn more about the Sunshine Coast in the future.
My advice...
My advice to future international students is: don’t overthink, just do more. Before coming here, I often had a lot of worries and questions, and I tried to figure out everything in advance. But I realised that the more you think, the more doubts you create.
In reality, it’s not just about planning everything perfectly, but about learning through action. So I would suggest trying different activities, joining events, and even working part-time if you can. These experiences help you become more adaptable, independent, and resilient.
