Hi everyone! I’m Luna, I’m in my early twenties and I'm originally from the Netherlands. I've been living in Austria, before coming to Australia through my Study Abroad. Both the Netherlands and Austria could not be more different from the Sunshine Coast!
Maybe that contrast is exactly why Australia was always at the top of my bucket list. I actually looked at UniSC a few years ago, before I even started studying in Austria, so then coming to Australia and studying at UniSC now feels a little bit like it was meant to be.
One of my favorite things about studying at UniSC has been how genuinely warm, laid‑back, and welcoming everyone is. The people here make you feel at home so quickly. My professors challenged the way I usually approach tasks and inspired me in ways I didn’t expect.
I’d heard great things from previous international students, I did my research and knew UniSC would be the perfect place to grow personally, academically, and creatively. Once I got settled in UniSC life, the campus, the sports culture, and the community vibe, it all felt like becoming part of a big family. The Student Guild trips were a huge part of that. Hikes, markets, and our day in Noosa, were unforgettable. And I actually met two of my closest friends on those trips.
Sports are such a massive part of life on the Sunshine Coast. Whether it’s running along the coastal beach paths, hitting the gym, trying surfing, or watching Rugby League, the energy here is contagious. My highlight so far was going to my first Australian Rugby League game. I had no idea about the rules, but the atmosphere pulled me right in.
The excitement of the crowd and the energy in the stadium made it an experience I'll never forget.
And then there are the beaches. Alex Headland, Mooloolaba, and the coastal walk quickly became part of my everyday routine. The nature here is unreal: ocean mornings, sunset runs, national parks, waterfalls, and wildlife are everywhere. It feels like there is always somewhere new to explore. Even the simple walk from my accommodation to campus and the gym made me appreciate the Sunny Coast’s lifestyle. Being surrounded by so much natural beauty and an active outdoor culture has been one of the best parts of living here.
My advice...
For fellow future international students, take the opportunity! Say YES to everything. Of course, not everything is always rainbows and sunshine. The first weeks can be challenging because everything is new, but you find your rhythm faster than you think. And the best part is: you’re never alone. Enjoy every moment. And pack wisely… Australia’s winter can surprise you!
We’d love to hear about your international student experience! Your story can inspire future students and highlight what makes the University of the Sunshine Coast special.
