I am from North Dakota, smack dab in the middle of North America where you cannot possibly get further from an ocean, which was one of the biggest factors for me in choosing Australia. I heard great things about UniSC from previous study abroad students, then I did some research and knew that it would be a great experience to further develop my interpersonal and business skills.
One of my very favourite things about studying at UniSC was how every person I encountered was super inviting, laid-back, and easy-going. The professors helped gain a new perspective and break some of my American habits which showed me a new outlook on tasks and relationships.
Once I was immersed with UniSC and the Sports Organisation at the UniSC Arena, it felt like a big family and I was glad to be a part of it.
I wanted to say a special thanks to Aleisha Howey on letting me get involved with the University Basketball League (UBL) Program. It has given me some life-long mates and provided me a great deal of pride.
I personally felt a great appreciation for Alex Headlands beach area and the scenic walk from the nearby accommodation to the UniSC campus and gym. The best part about the Sunny Coast to me was the overall culture of everyone being active, including, and easy-going.
My advice...
- Bring the least amount of distractions as possible (you don’t need an Xbox, PlayStation, movies, etc.)
- Go to every O-Week function at Varsity. This is the best kickoff to your experience to meet all the people you will see around campus.
- Buy a surfboard right away because time flies and you should spend as much time as possible teaching yourself a new skill and hobby.
- No matter how cloudy it is, always wear sunscreen. In February the sun rises at 4:30am!
- Don’t be shy to say hello first, because Aussies are the most welcoming conversationalists ever and it’s the easiest way to immerse yourself and not stay a tourist.
- Get local coffee, strike a conversation with the barista, introduce yourself to people, immerse yourself freely without fear, and always remember that nobody knows you and you have a great opportunity to be the person you strive to be.
- Create new habits!
I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. Looking back at my experience 2 years later, I still hold a piece of the Sunny Coast with me. Take the risk, take the flight, and take it all in.
