Breaking into cyber security: How UniSC helped shape Jaya's future

Meet Jaya Narayanasamy

I am originally from Chennai, India, and I come from a Computer Science and Engineering background. While exploring universities for my postgraduate studies, I found UniSC particularly appealing because of its strong teaching standards, supportive learning environment, modern facilities, and beautiful coastal location.

Coming from a coastal city myself, I felt an immediate sense of connection and comfort with the lifestyle and environment at UniSC, which made the transition to studying in Australia feel more welcoming and familiar.

I chose to pursue a Master of Information and Communications Technology because I wanted to expand my knowledge across different areas of technology rather than limiting myself to one specialisation. What attracted me most to the program was its diverse range of subjects, including Cyber Security, Machine Learning, and Data Analytics. I was excited by the opportunity to explore multiple fields within ICT and build a broad skill set that would help me shape my future career path.

Studying in Australia also gave me the opportunity to experience a global education system, develop independence, and gain exposure to diverse cultures and perspectives. Through my studies at UniSC, I hoped to grow both personally and professionally while preparing for a career in areas such as Cyber Security or Data Analytics.

One of my favourite things about UniSC is the very supportive lecturers and the welcoming environment on campus. When I was studying in India, my education was mostly focused on exams, and I did not have much experience with assignments. So when I came to UniSC in my first semester, everything was new to me. With the help of my friends, university support, and especially my lecturers, I slowly learned how to do assignments, research, and academic writing confidently.

All my lecturers always encouraged me to improve with every assignment. Many times, I had one-on-one sessions with them to clear my doubts, and they were always patient, supportive, and helpful. I really appreciate how approachable and understanding they were throughout my studies. Their teaching standards and knowledge are excellent, and they played a very important role in my journey at UniSC.

Apart from academics, I also enjoyed student life and the campus environment. I became friends with many students and Student Guild members, and all of them contributed equally to making my experience memorable. Every week, I used to participate in social activities and gatherings at UniSC. I watched movies with other international students, joined painting activities, played games, and attended different events on campus. These experiences helped me feel connected and comfortable while studying away from home.

My time at UniSC helped me grow both personally and professionally. It improved my confidence, communication skills, and technical knowledge, and motivated me to continue building my career in Cyber Security. I am very grateful to all the lecturers, friends, and staff who supported me throughout my journey. UniSC will always be a special part of my life.

I love living on the Sunshine Coast. Whenever I get free time, I love going to the beaches and exploring new places around the region. The Sunshine Coast feels like a tourist paradise, and I feel very blessed to live here.

Over the years, I have explored most of the places around the Sunshine Coast, visited many beaches, and enjoyed activities like hiking, trekking, and bush walking. I truly feel it is one of the best places in Australia to study, live, and work because of the peaceful lifestyle, beautiful nature, and welcoming environment.

One thing I especially love about UniSC is the campus itself. Even after finishing my studies, I still visit UniSC regularly because the campus is so beautiful and connected with nature. I still live around the university area, and I come to the campus almost four days a week for walking and running on the university grounds and track after work. Being at UniSC always gives me a calm and relaxed feeling.

The campus is full of nature and wildlife, which makes the experience even more special. Seeing geese, kangaroos, and so many different birds around the campus became one of my favourite parts of living here.

I have taken thousands of pictures of the wildlife and beautiful surroundings both inside and around UniSC because the environment is just so peaceful and unique.

Living on the Sunshine Coast has truly enhanced my student experience in every way. It helped me feel balanced, connected to nature, and comfortable living away from home. The lifestyle, community, and beautiful environment made my journey unforgettable. Now, the Sunshine Coast and UniSC feel like a second home to me.

My advice...

One piece of advice I would give to future international students considering UniSC is to be open to new experiences and make the most of every opportunity the university offers. In the beginning, it can feel overwhelming moving to a new country, adapting to a different education system, and being away from family, but with time everything becomes easier. UniSC has a very supportive environment, and there are always people willing to help you.

One thing I wish I knew before arriving is that it is completely okay to ask questions and seek support whenever needed. The lecturers, student support services, and fellow students are very friendly and approachable. I learned so much not only from my studies but also from interacting with people from different cultures and backgrounds.

My biggest tip would be to actively participate in campus activities, social events, and student gatherings because that is where you build friendships, confidence, and unforgettable memories. Don’t just focus only on studies, enjoy the experience, explore the Sunshine Coast, visit the beaches, try outdoor activities, and connect with nature because the lifestyle here is truly special.

I would also say to step out of your comfort zone and believe in yourself. When I first came here, I was worried about whether I would be able to find a job in my field in Australia. But while studying at UniSC, I started applying for jobs during my third trimester and got an internship opportunity with the Sunshine Coast Council. Later, even before graduating, I received a full-time opportunity with the Council in Cyber Security. That was one of the proudest moments in my journey and showed me that hard work, consistency, and self-belief really make a difference.

So my advice to future students is to believe in yourself, seek guidance whenever you need help, and never miss opportunities that come your way. If I was able to do it, anyone can. UniSC not only gave me an education but also helped me grow personally, professionally, and confidently in a completely new country.
