A step into the unknown: Kayla's UniSC experience in Australia

Meet Kayla Brundage

I chose to go to Australia because I wanted to go as far outside of my comfort zone as possible and explore a country that I haven’t had the opportunity to go to yet.

I had very little knowledge of Australia before going there. While I was there, I took a class about indigenous Australian culture where I was able to learn about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

I feel like being able to become a local for 6 months, as well as taking classes that enhanced my knowledge of the cultures I was living amongst was a once in a lifetime experience and I was able to better appreciate my surroundings because of it!

I loved being a local. I was a regular at Banjos Bakery in Sippy Downs, and Melody’s Cafe on Mooloolaba esplanade, we befriended the owners of the Pilates studio that was walking distance from campus, and the bus system made getting around super easy.

I loved being able to have easy access to everything. I was able to go to the beach daily, visit the Australia Zoo many times, and hike as much as possible! It was a beautiful experience overall and having so many new and unfamiliar places to visit both tourist attractions and local favourites was a pleasure.

My advice...

Take the leap. It might seem far out of your comfort zone, but everyone is so welcoming and the experience as a whole is life changing and completely unique from other study abroad locations. You won’t regret coming to UniSC.
