UniSC is deeply saddened by the passing of two of the University's most significant and cherished supporters, Roy and Nola Thompson.

For more than 15 years, Roy and Nola's quiet generosity and unwavering commitment to helping others have transformed opportunities for UniSC students and advanced world-class research that continues to make a difference across the Sunshine Coast, Australia and beyond.

The Thompsons were passionate advocates for mental health, student wellbeing and creating pathways to education for those facing hardship.

Their philanthropic vision was instrumental in the establishment of the Thompson Institute, a globally recognised centre advancing research into mental health, neurological disorders and brain health.

Within the Institute, their support enabled the creation of the Nola Thompson Centre for Advanced Imaging, which undertakes cutting-edge neuroimaging research to better understand mental health conditions and disease.

Their generosity also helped establish the National PTSD Research Centre, a nationally recognised centre that continues to drive research and innovation aimed at improving the lives of people affected by trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder.

UniSC Vice Chancellor and President Professor Helen Bartlett said the Thompsons’ legacy will continue to shape lives for generations.

“Through initiatives including study support bursaries, the Thompson Excellence Scholarship and the Thompson Study Support Scholarship and Bursary, countless UniSC students have received financial assistance and opportunities that have enabled them to pursue their educational goals.

“They believed deeply in the power of education, research and community.

Their generosity has changed lives, strengthened our region and advanced knowledge that will continue to benefit people around the world.

“UniSC is grateful for their support, and their legacy will remain an enduring part of the University, including through continued support for students for decades to come,” Prof Bartlett said.

Roy and Nola's vision, compassion and commitment to creating opportunities for others have left an indelible mark on UniSC and the wider community.
