Dr Sharon Nyari is a research fellow working on infectious diseases in koalas. Her work is primarily focused on the prevention and treatment of Chlamydia in koalas and to better understand the process from infection to diseased state. She is working on the development of a chlamydial vaccine for use in koalas and through her external collaborations has conducted vaccine trials in both captive and wild koalas. Dr Nyari has also evaluated the therapeutic effects of an anti-chlamydial vaccine in ocular diseased koalas assessing their immune responses and genetics. Additionally, Dr Nyari has also worked on the development of rapid diagnostic assays for the identification of different species of Chlamydia and viral infections in animals.
