Dr Walsh completed his PhD in Public Health (Health Promotion) at the School of Public Health and Social Work at Queensland University of Technology. Before entering academia, he worked as a health promotion practitioner and manager for 24 years, working in the non-profit sector in Queensland. His career in health promotion was focused on both sexual and reproductive health, and physical activity and health. 

Anthony's doctoral research explored the application of Social Cognitive Theory to the promotion of active commuting (walking and/or cycling to and from work), with a specific focus on the roles of social support and self-regulation in changing commuter behaviour He continues to focus on active travel and active commuting, and in recent years has been concentrating on the measurement of and promotion of physical activity associated with the use of public transport. 

Dr Walsh coordinates the courses Health Promotion Assessment and Planning at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels, and Health Promotion Implementation and Evaluation. As a member of the Public Health Discipline teaching team, he also contributes to the teaching of Think Health.
