Dr Renin Toms is a cardiovascular epidemiologist with expertise in population-scale health data, health data analytics, spatial epidemiology and large-scale linked health data. Her research focuses on understanding the distribution and determinants of cardiovascular disease across populations, including how clinical, social, environmental and geographic factors interact to influence cardiovascular health. A central focus of her work is translating complex population health data into evidence that can inform cardiovascular disease prevention, clinical practice and public health policy.

Renin has developed her research career across Australia and the UK and has contributed to major national and international research collaborations involving population-scale health data. In Wales, she led the Data and Advanced Analytics theme within the National Cardiovascular Research Network, bringing together advanced analytical approaches and population health data to support cardiovascular research. Her research has included population-wide investigations of cardiovascular and thrombotic outcomes following COVID-19 infection and vaccination, including studies involving tens of millions of individuals across the UK. Her research has contributed to national and international evidence and has been cited in policy documents across multiple countries and international organisations.

Her broader research interests include cardiovascular disease prevention, cardiometabolic health, spatial patterns of cardiovascular risk, health inequalities, access to healthcare, and the application of advanced epidemiological and statistical methods to routinely collected and linked health data. She is particularly interested in how emerging health data science and analytical approaches can be used to identify population-level cardiovascular risk and support more targeted prevention.

Alongside her research, Renin teaches epidemiology and quantitative research methods and supervises research students undertaking population health research. She welcomes interdisciplinary collaborations and research students interested in cardiovascular epidemiology, population health data, spatial epidemiology and innovative analytical approaches to major cardiovascular and population health challenges.
